DECEMBER 12, 2021

TASK 1:

Please translate (= render) the following (stuff) into English paying much attention to the correct (= proper) usage of the English tenses.

1. Зима в Москве уже в полном разгаре как месяц. Два дня тому назад резко похолодало. Сегодня утром я не смог завести свою машину.

Условие: В данный момент только 8 часов утра.


TEACHER'S TRANSLATION VERSIONS:

The winter in Moscow has been in full swing for already a month now
(= The Moscow winter's already been well underway for a month now).

Two days ago
(= 2 days back)

it suddenly got cold
(= it grew cold all of a sudden).

I couldn't start my car this morning
(= I failed starting) my four wheels this morning.

ПОЛЕЗНЫЕ СИНОНИМЫ СЛОВ И ВЫРАЖЕНИЙ:

быть в полном разгаре (для погоды): to be in (a) full swing = to be well underway = to be in (a) full fling

становиться холодно, холодать: to get cold = to grow cold = to become cold = to turn cold = sl. to go cold

уже (как) месяц: for a month now = for a month already = for already a month = for a whole month now = for quite a month already

резко похолодало: it got cold abruptly = it grew suddenly cold = it suddenly grew cold = it became abruptly cold = it turned cold all of a sudden = it went cold all of the sudden

(я не смог завести) свою машину: (I couldn't start = I couldn't manage to start = I failed starting = I failed to start = I wasn't able to start = I was unable to start) my car

моя машина, мой автомобиль: my car = sl. my four wheels = sl. my set of wheels



2. Возможно (= Вероятно = Может быть), машина бы завелась даже при сегодняшних минус 30 градусах, если бы я поставил её в свой утепленный гараж, но я просто поленился это сделать, потому что гараж находится в двух километрах от (моего) дома.


TEACHER'S TRANSLATION VERSIONS:

The car might have got started (= The automobile might've possibly got started)

even at the today's 30 degrees below
(= even at these 30 below today)

if I had put in my warm garage
(= had I parked it in my insulated garage),

but I was just lazy to do that
(= however, I was simply loath to do it)

because my garage was two kilometres away from my house
(= since my garage was located 2 kilometres off my place = for my garage was 2 kilometres from where I lived).


ПОЛЕЗНЫЕ СИНОНИМЫ СЛОВ И ВЫРАЖЕНИЙ:

Возможно, машина бы завелась: The car might've got started = The automobile might've possibly got started = The car may have got started = Perhaps, the car could've got started = Maybe, the car coulda got started

машина, легковой автомобиль, тачка: a car = an automobile ['o:temebi:l] = sl. four wheels = sl. a set of wheels

при 30 градусах ниже нуля: at 30 (degrees) below = at minus 30 (degrees)

теплый, утепленный гараж: a warm garage = an insulated garage = a winterised garage = a cold-proof garage

лениться (что-л с/делать): to be lazy = to be reluctant = to be loath = to be unwilling (to do sth)



3. Что там говорят? Дорога ложка к обеду. Зря что я не загнал машину в гараж. Если бы я это сделал, мне бы не пришлось сегодня добираться до работы на метро и автобусе. Я бы сейчас не стоял у начальника в кабинете и не оправдывался за свое опоздание.


TEACHER'S TRANSLATION VERSIONS:

What do they say
(= What do people say)?

When a thing is done, advice comes too late.

I wish I had driven the car into the garage
(= I wish I'd pulled the car into the garage).

If I'd done that
(= Had I done it),

I would not have had
(= I would've never had)

to get to my office
(= to reach my office)

by both metro and bus
(= using the metro and a bus).

I would not be standing
(= I wouldn't be standing)

in the boss's office
(= in my chief's office)

now excusing myself of being late
(= telling a story now of my coming late).


ПОЛЕЗНЫЕ СИНОНИМЫ СЛОВ И ВЫРАЖЕНИЙ:

добираться до работы: to get to one's office = to reach one's place of work = to make one's office

ехать на метро: to go by metro (в России) = to go by underground = to go by tube (в Англии) = to go by subway (в Америке) = to catch a metro train = to take the underground = to use the subway = to travel by metro = sl. to tube it

Реальный процесс: I wouldn't be standing in the boss's office now excusing myself... Я бы сейчас не стоял у начальника в кабинете и не оправдывался...

Нереальный процесс: I wouldn't have been standing in the boss's office excusing myself ... for 20 minutes now. Я бы (сейчас) не стоял у начальника в кабинете и не оправдывался ... уже 20 минут.

оправдываться за что-либо: to excuse oneself of (doing) sth (если виноват) / to justify oneself of (doing) sth (если не виноват)

чьё-либо опоздание: one's being late = one's coming late = one's late arrival
