TASK 2:

Please translate (= render) the following (stuff) into English paying much attention to the correct (= proper) usage of the English tenses.

"Я слышал, что мистер Грид (Greed) недавно умер. Ты когда его видел в последний раз?" - спросил Сэм. "Вообще-то он умер (уже) давным-давно. Так, если быть точным, господин Грид покинул этот бреный мир ровно полгода тому назад. Должно быть тебе сообщила о его смерти какая-то сплетница, которая никогда и не знала мистера Грида," - ответил Джон и добавил: "Ах, если бы он не сыграл в ящик так внезапно, я бы еще мог надеяться получить свои деньги, которые я ему одолжил год назад. Если бы я только знал, что так получится, я бы ни за что этого не сделал. Как бы я хотел, чтобы он воскрес как Христос и вернул мне свой долг! Сумма ведь была приличная!


TEACHER'S TRANSLATION VERSIONS:

"I hear
(= Word goes)

that Mr. Greed has recently passed away
(= Mr. Greed's lately died).

When did you see him last time
(= When last did you see him)?"

asked Sam
(= Sam asked).

"Actually
(= In fact),

he had died long before
(= he'd long died).

Well, to be more exact
(= Well, to be precise),

Mr. Greed shuffled off this mortal coil
(= Mr. Greed joined the majority)

promptly six months ago
(= precisely half a year back).

Some gossip who never really came across Mr. Greed
(= A scandalmonger who never knew Mr. Greed in fact)

must have told you about his death
(= must've told you about his desease [di'si:s]),"

answered John and added
(= John answered and said more):

"If he had not gone belly up
(= Had he not kicked the bucket)

so suddenly
(= real sudden),

I could still have a hope
(= I could be still hoping)

to get my money back
(= to have my money back)

that I lent him a year ago
(= I gave him a year back).

If only I had known that it would happen just like that
(= Had I only been aware it would occur that way),

I would have never done that
(= I would've never done it).

How I wish he rose from the dead just like Jesus Christ
(= How I wish he came back to life just like Jesus)

and paid me off his debt
(= to make his debt up to me)!

It was quite a good amount
(= The amount was rather decent)!"

ПОЛЕЗНЫЕ СИНОНИМЫ СЛОВ И ВЫРАЖЕНИЙ:

я слышал, говорят, ходят слухи: I hear = word goes = there's a word on the street = they say = people say

он недавно умер: he has lately died = he's recently died = he's died of late = he has passed away of late = he's recently gone

Когда ты его видел в последний раз?: When did you see him (for the) last time? = When'd you see him last? = When last did you see him? = When was the last time you saw him?

вообще-то, фактически, в общем то: actually = basically = in fact = as a matter of fact

если быть точным: to be (more) exact = to be (more) precise

смерть, кончина: death = desease [di'si:s] - Не путайте со словом disease [di'zi:z] болезнь - illness = sickness

покойный, умерший deseased [di'si:st] - покойник a deseased person / the deseased

я бы ни за что этого не сделал: I would have never done that = I would've never done it = I would've failed doing that = sl. I woulda failed doing it = sl. I'd've never done that = sl. I'da never done that

расплатиться с кем-либо, отдать долг (денежный) кому-либо: to pay one's debt off to sb = to pay sb off one's debt = to pay one's debt down to sb = to pay sb down one's debt = to make one's debt up to sb = to square up with sb = to get even with sb

Сумма ведь была приличная!: The amount was rather nice! = The amount was quite handsome! = It was quite a decent amount! = The amount was real big!
