Two American friends are chatting about their new Russian teacher arriving soon Два американских друга говорят о новом учителе русского языка, который должен скоро появится в их школе Jack is a geek (excellent student) Джек - ботан, т.е. отличник Nick is a slacker (lousy student) Ник - тормоз, т.е. двоечник
JACK: Hello! This is Jack speaking. Who is it?
NICK: Hi, Jackie. It’s me, Nick. How are you doing, old buddy? Did you hear that we're gonna have a new teacher of Russian soon?
JACK: You do say? Is it another smashing rib-tickler, or what? Hmm. It rings a bell, you know. … Come on, man! Tell me like it is.
NICK: You bet your sweet life, Jackie, that’s abso-bloody-lutely true. His name is Alexander Gasinski. He comes from cold Russia with real huge bears. D’ya wanna learn Russian that bad?
JACK: Yeah. So bad I can taste it. How soon will the new teacher turn up, Nickie? I hope he won’t leave us so soon like those before him, right? … I want to learn to speak good Russian.
NICK: Oh, don’t mention that sob story once again, okay? Every time a new teacher comes, he or she leaves us within a month.
JACK: When will we have the new teacher I ask you again?
NICK: Ha ha ha. Well … Till the cows come home. … How do I know that? Maybe next month, maybe tomorrow, maybe never … You wanna talk straight, Jackie?
JACK: Sorry? … I don’t dig ya. Oh, yeah! I don’t understand you.
NICK: I don’t really feel like learning Russian. I’m, like, so like, you know, a bad student. Kinda lazy. Russian doesn’t come that easy to me, somehow. I’m a real slacker all right.
JACK: What d’ya mean? You won’t go to his Russian classes?
NICK: No, man. I will not. Never this time. I’m, like, … you know …
JACK: Come on, Nickie! Stop pussyfooting! Tell me what you mean.
NICK: Well, fact is I’m a very bad student. Pretty lousy, huh? You are excellent at all the subjects. You are mad about Russian, as well, aren’t you? Sometimes, I envy you so much.
JACK: Yes. So what? What does it matter?
NICK: You are my B.F., Jack, and I’ll tell you what. No good teacher would ever quit our class again but for such stupid and lazy students like me. We, bad boys, disrupt precious lessons because we like to make so much fun.
JACK: Are you sure you won’t attend Russian classes anymore?
NICK: No, I won’t. Why should I if I don’t like learning Russian? My silly presence only makes it impossible for you and the rest of the guys to learn, to boost your progress, you know. Anyway, I don’t want another conflict with the new teacher only because I’m a lazybones. Besides, I want you to learn the language that you are so crazy about. You are a great friend and I wish you well.
JACK: Thank you, Nickie. You are my best friend, indeed. Maybe you’ll take another shot at learning Russian?
NICK: No, man. I am a lazy guy. And it looks like it’s for good.
