TASK 6:

Please translate (= render) the following (stuff) into English paying much attention to the correct (= proper) usage of the English tenses.

Зря что я поехал на охоту две недели (тому) назад. Мне нужно было бы внимательнее следить за сводками погоды. Не успел я заехать (на машине) в лес, как пошел сильный густой снег. Я ничего не мог видеть на расстоянии 10 метров. Короче мне пришлось спешно собрать манатки и вернуться домой ни с чем. Если бы я задержался в лесу еще хотя бы на полчаса, возможно, я бы не смог выехать из леса. Дорогу бы просто замело. Вся моя большая семья очень хотела, чтобы я подстрелил кабана. Если бы мне удалось это сделать (в тот последний раз), у нас (сейчас) на новогоднем столе было бы много свежего мяса. Ну да ладно, в следующий раз повезет больше.


TEACHER'S TRANSLATION VERSIONS:

I wish I had not gone out hunting two weeks before.
= I wish I'd never gone hunting two weeks earlier.

I ought to have been following the weather reports more closely.
= I should've been watching the weather forecast more carefully.

Scarcely ever had I driven into the forest than heavy thick snow started to fall.
= No sooner had I driven into the forest than it began snowing real hard.

I was unable to see anything within 10 metres away.
= I could see nothing over a distance of ten metres.

To make my long story short, I had to hurriedly pack my kit and retrace back home empty-handed.
= Long story short, I had to hastily pack my shit and hurry away back home with no prey at all.

If I had lingered in the forest for yet another half an hour,
= Had I stayed in the forest for half-hour longer,

I could not have driven out of it.
= I couldn't have got outa there.

The road simply would have got snowbound.
= The road would've been all snowed up.

All my large family wanted of me was to shoot down a boar.
= My whole big family wanted me to shoot down a hog.

If I had succeeded, we would have plenty of fresh meat on our new-year table.
= Had I managed that, there'd be a lot of carcass meat on our new-year table.

Oh well, better luck next time.
= Okay. I'll have more luck next time.

ПОЛЕЗНЫЕ СИНОНИМЫ СЛОВ И ВЫРАЖЕНИЙ:

ходить на охоту: to go out hunting = to go hunting = to go for a hunt = to go on a hunting expedition

две недели тому назад: two weeks ago = a fortnight ago = a couple of weeks ago = two weeks back = 2 weeks earlier = 2 weeks previously = (Только для совершенных прошедших времен) two weeks before

более внимательно: more carefully = more intently = more steadfastly = more closely

(Только для нереальных действий) Не успел кто-либо что-то сделать, как что-либо (уже) случилось: No sooner had sb done sth than sth happened = Barely (ever) had sb done sth than sth occurred = Hardly (ever) had sb done sth than sth took place = Scarcely (ever) had sb done sth than sth happened

Короче говоря,...: Shortly speaking,... = Briefly saying,... = Long story short,... = To make one's long story short,... = To make short of long,... = In one word,... = To put it shortly,...

Дорогу бы просто замело (тогда): The road would have been covered with snow. = The road would've been/got snowbound. = The road would've been/got snowed up.

вся моя большая семья: all my big family = my entire huge family = my whole large family = my entire extended family = all my numerous family

подстрелить кабана: to shoot down a (wild) boar = to shoot a (wild) pig down = to get down a (wild) hog = sl. to pop off a boar

СРАВНИТЕ:

стрелять в кого-либо: to shoot sb

подстрелить; ранить кого-либо: to shoot sb down = to get sb down = to bring sb down = sl. to pop sb off

убить; пристрелить кого-либо: to shoot sb up

поймать; схлопотать пулю: to get shot = to catch a bullet

глагол to shoot неправильный: to shoot (shot, shot) стрелять (в кого-л); снимать (на кинокамеру); давать, пускать побеги (о растениях) и много других значений

(Нереальное действие) Если бы мне удалось это сделать,: If I had (ever) managed to do it, = Had I succeeded in (doing) that, = Had I been a success in (doing) that, = If I'd been successful in (doing) that, = If I could've coped with (doing) that, = Had I been able to do that, = If I'd (ever) handled that,
