Scarcely had the famous singer stepped onto (= appeared upon) the stage than the audience was loudly applauding her.

Barely (ever) had the family finished (= was through eating) their dinner than the mother was washing up a heap of dishes again.


6. Не успел я поднести зажженную спичку к дровам, как они уже весело потрескивали в камине.
Hardly (ever) had I brought a burning match to the firewood than it was merrily crackling in the fireplace.
