TASK 15:

Please, Dear Learners of spoken English, check yourselves out if you have command of the participal phrases (= ing/ed clauses). Translate the following 3 sentences into nice and correct English:

1. Идя в школу пешком, девочка зашла в магазин, чтобы купить себе шоколадку.

2. Придя в школу вовремя, девочка поделилась шоколадкой со своей лучшей подругой.

3. Довольные и счастливые, подружки побежали в класс, как только прозвенел урок.


TEACHER'S TRANSLATION VERSIONS:

1. Going to the school on foot, the girl called for a shop to buy herself a bar of chocolate.
= Walking to the school, the girl dropped in on some shop to buy a chocolate tablet for herself.

2. Having come to the school in good time, the girl shared her chocolate tablet with her best girlfriend.
= Upon reaching the school in time, the girl split her chocolate bar with her best schoolmate.
= On getting to the school at a good hour, the girl snacked her choc with her best playmate.

3. Happy and contented, the girlfriends ran (over) to the classroom the instant the bell went.
= Pleased and delighted, the schoolmates hurried (over) to the classroom as they heard the bell go.

ПОЛЕЗНЫЕ СИНОНИМЫ СЛОВ И ВЫРАЖЕНИЙ:

идти пешком: to go on foot = to travel on foot = to walk = sl. to walk it

зайти, заходить в какое-либо место: to drop in on some place = to stop by for some place = to call for some place = sl. to hit some place

плитка шоколада, шоколадка: a bar of chocolate = a chocolate tablet = sl. a choc

вовремя (но не точно по расписанию): in (good) time = at a good hour = timely

вовремя (точно по расписанию): on time = on schedule = puctually

делиться чем-либо с кем-либо: to share sth with sb = to split sth with sb = to snack sth with sb

довольный: pleased = satisfied = content = contented = delighted

как только: as soon as = the moment = the instant = once

прозвенеть (о школьном звонке): to go (of a school bell)
